I wish I had more time to spend on these. They're okay, but not as great as I'd like, although this one was super cute.

Christmas in the Howard home was never a huge cheerful family holiday. It was quiet, understated, with exchanges of gifts [often money], involved the family's attendance at a company party, and inevitably Kitty having one too many cosmopolitans.

Christmas was usually Victor spending as much time as the holiday season demanded with his parents before he couldn't tolerate being in the room with his near-silent father, increasingly drunk mother, and servants he'd much rather be talking to.

That was before Kit came to live with them.

This Christmas was different. Christmas was also Kit's birthday and for the first time, Victor found himself looking forward to December 25th. So maybe he wasn't throwing a huge party like most people had for their birthdays, but he had plans, plans that involved driving him to the Villa Olivia Ski resort. It was near enough they didn't have to drive for hours, and they could be home in time for Christmas dinner.

Victor was slowly realizing Kit liked several things. One, he liked riding in Victor's car. He'd sit with a hand on the seat, feeling the vibrations of the engine. And two, he liked anything that got Victor outside of the house, and skating and snowboarding were surefire ways to do that. Victor wasn't good at social relationships, he knew, but he also knew he liked Kit, more than he liked anyone else who ever attempted to be his friend. And he wanted his birthday to be special.

He'd been to the resort before, enough times the management knew his name and seemed surprised to see him with someone not his own family. He'd never brought anyone else before. Kit was special. Special to the point where when Victor reached out and slipped a pale hand into his larger brown one to tug him past the reception desk, a flush rode high on pale cheeks. Special to the point where the flush only deepened at the sight of the couples and mistletoe everywhere.

Special to the point where the shy, quiet, "Happy Birthday" Victor offered Kit in a voice barely above a whisper was said just before he leaned close and landed lips on his cheek, a kiss he wished he'd had the nerve to land on lips instead.

But they still had the rest of the night. Maybe he'd summon the courage after all.
